Tips for taking care of your ears during the holidays
Picture yourself lying on the beach in Torre del Mar—umbrella set up, beach bar in the background, and that unmistakable sound of the waves gently breaking. Everything is perfect… until, after your first swim, you feel a “glug” in your ear that just won’t go away. Like wearing a dead earbud stuck to your head. And in the background, that inner mom-voice we all have: “I told you to wear earplugs.”
Yes, summer can be a dream… or a comedy of errors if you neglect your ears. That’s why, from Ópticas Perea—your trusted optical and hearing center in Torre del Mar—we’re sharing how to enjoy the summer without missing a single wave… or conversation.
Otitis: the “enemy” of summer
That ear pain after a beach day—the one that starts as a minor annoyance and ends with a rushed trip to urgent care. Swimmer’s ear (otitis externa) is as common in summer as sunscreen… but much less pleasant.
How can you prevent it?
- Use custom-made swimming earplugs. Comfortable, reusable, and crafted in our center to fit you perfectly.
- Dry your ears well after swimming. And no, cotton swabs don’t help—they just push wax deeper in.
- Don’t stay in the water all day. Give your ears a break.
Volume: keep it at the right level
In summer, it’s easy to get carried away. We crank up the music in the car, dance next to the speakers at parties, sing at the top of our lungs (on or off-key)… But our ears don’t always enjoy it as much as we do.
Sound-smart recommendations:
- If using headphones, follow the 60/60 rule: no more than 60% volume and take breaks every 60 minutes.
- At concerts or festivals, stay away from the speakers.
Consider special hearing protectors that reduce noise without sacrificing sound quality.
Planes, diving & ear pressure: Basic tips
Between flights, dives, and aquatic adventures, pressure changes are common in summer. Your ears work hard to keep up.
How to help them adjust:
- Before flying or diving, keep your nasal passages clear. Even a mild cold can make travel miserable for your ears.
- Chew gum or yawn during takeoff and landing to help equalize pressure.
- Don’t dive straight in—descend slowly, giving your ears time to adapt.
