Do you have guests with hearing loss this holiday season? Here’s how you can help them feel comfortable
The Christmas holidays are just around the corner. Loaded tables, cross-conversations, laughter, background music… and that lovely chaos that only happens when the family gets together.
But for people with hearing loss, these gatherings can be a challenge. Not because they don't want to be present, but because sometimes they find it difficult to keep up with conversations or feel like part of the group.
The good news is that, with a few small gestures, we can help them feel more comfortable, included, and at ease. And we assure you that they make a difference.
Choose a good spot at the table
It seems unimportant, but it’s not. Seating your family member or guest with hearing loss in an area with good lighting where they can clearly see faces makes communication much easier. If they usually read lips or rely on facial expressions, they will appreciate it more than you can imagine.
Speak facing them (and calmly)
There's no need to exaggerate your pronunciation or raise your voice too much. Simply:
- Speak while looking at the person
- Don't cover your mouth
- Don't speak from another room or while walking
These are small details that help them not lose the thread of the conversation.
Reduce the background noise a little
We know that at Christmas there are carols, trays coming and going, and children running around... but if you can avoid having the television on in the background or playing the music too loud, the gathering will be much more comfortable for everyone. A quieter environment facilitates effortless communication.
Include them in conversations
In large gatherings, it's easy for someone to be unintentionally left out. A very simple way to prevent this is to take a short pause before changing the subject and make sure the person has been following along. A simple: "What do you think?" or "Can you hear it well from there?" can change everything.
Be patient and understanding
Christmas is also about empathy. Hearing loss affects not only what is heard, but also how every moment is experienced. Showing understanding and speaking without rushing will help the person truly enjoy the gathering.
